techniques used on images shown lastnight
Hello John, Fantastic presentation last night i really enjoyed it and i love most of the stuff that you are producing.
please can you tell me the technique that you used on the padley gorge rocks shots and also the technique used on the shot with the red bike (cant see it on our site but you showed it last night) there are what look like contours on an os map on the print sort of solarised the rest but left the bike alone.
\thanks in advance - Ian

Cathedral photos
Hi John,
I recently attended your roadshow at Bognor Regis camera club and enjoyed it very much. I was very interested in the black and white photos of the cathedral that looked like line art. I would be grateful for any advice as to achieving this effect. I do not have Photoshop but use Nikon's Capture NX2. Thanking you.

Your presentation and techniques.
Great performance on Monday, loved every minute of it.
Would be great if you could give me the details of:
1. the process whereby you add a white layer and erase it a way with a "fuzzy" brush
2. the technique and filters used in street photography.
3. the filter used to "sharpen" the water in the Padley Gorge shots.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi John,
I have not spent a more entertaining couple of hours at a photographic club lecture in my life, you are seriously barking mad ;o), keep taking those tablets!
Terrific images in particular the ones where you used the fuzzy brush technique, I would love to know how you did this and would be really grateful for the "recipe”.
You have a stunning eye for a picture, something many of us strive for but will never achive in the same way that you have.
Thanks for an entertaining and informative evening, (best £2 I’ve spent in a long time).
Cheers

Cannock Photographic Society Visit
John
I retired Sept 2009 and decide to invest in a digital camera. I have taken quite a few photographs and am particularly interested in landscape, nature and old machinery.
Yours was my second visit to the society in Cannock - Peter Yoe was the first last week and by the way he did say that it was a colleagues idea to shoot with a moving camera at Scarborough.
I thought your presentation was very invigorating and believe that even non photographers would have found the content and your wit engaging.
I am now encouraged to be more experimental when on shoots.
I would like to know what camera you use when on your street walkabouts?
regards Frank Gill - Well Impressed!!!
p.s. I have e-mailed your website address to my daughter who is a graphics designer because I think she will enjoy your work

Hello John
Thank you for a very interesting and dynamic presentation last night. In addition to the methodology relating to the Cleethorpes images, would you also please provide me with the technique used to create the Mablethorpe prints. You did tell me but I can't remember the detail, I'll bring my quill and some parchment next time.
Thank you very much, kind regards

Talk for Bury St Edmunds PS
Hi John,
I'm wondering if you are doing any talks in the near future in our area? Maybe we could blag a visit if your coming to East Anglia?
You probably don't remember, but at Focus On Imaging one year my husband was telling you how you'd changed his perception of photography. So much so that he's given up full time employment to study for a BA in photography! - Thanks for that! :0)
Hope you're keeping fine.

John Wells Road Show October 13th 2010
HI John
Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your lecture last night, although I only saw your previous lecture last season at my own club (and was just visiting another local club last night) most of your new "Road Show" was completely new work that I hadn't seen before, I particularly liked the fact that you passed a lot of your prints around to the club members for us to have a closer look at and displayed the remainder if we wanted to look at those later too.
I was inspired by your "Panels" of work because that is something I never do (I just seem to focus on images as individual images) and thanks to your inspiration I am going to make the effort to give that a try.
Many thanks again for a very entertaining evening.

Dear Mr Wells, Thank you for a interesting, entertaining and informative evening at Keyworth Camera Club. It is not often I see such an enthusiatic and creative approach to the hobby/job/obsession call it what you will. I have just bought a recent edition of photoshop and would be greatful if you showed me how you did the Cleethopes images. What a brilliant evening you gave us at Poulton PS on 23rd Sept...thank you. I was on the front row taking notes but I've missed out some info. Please could you tell me how you did the random raggy edges on some of your candid shots. In your Gallery 2 (on-line), the same effect is in the Cancun Mexico no2.series.
Was in London last week & I tried holding the camera at waist level 1/125sec @ f8 wide angle & it worked!! Not as good as your shots but good for me.
Hope you both enjoyed the illuminations

Creative edges
Hi John, many thanks for your presentation at our club on Thursday evening. I found it very interesting as its the type of photography I like to do instead of following rules etc. I've never seen so many people alert during a speakers evening. Anyway, please may I ask you for the details of the software you mentioned that applies the creative edges to your images especially the effect of erasing into the edges and especially the type used for your Cancun water dispensers. Thanks again for your great presentation.

Photofold thanks
Hi John, Ian here (the guy with the laptop). I just wanted to say a big thank you for presenting some of your amazing work to us last night. It was as you had hoped very inspiring and very refreshing to meet someone who enjoys bending 'the rules' too - there's not enough of that at Photofold for my tastes. I'm a big fan of trying new things and am very in to different processing techniques. It was my favourite meeting of the year by miles and I think Mr Mason's too.
It also made me realise that I should go for at least me LRPS soon, if not straight to ARPS.
Thanks again!

Would like to say how much I enjoyed your talk last Tuesday at the Arden club with Bob Moore.
I was very interested with the photos you took of people in Worthing with the camera at waist level, can you tell me what setting you used and are these for a compact or SLR, its something I would like to try as I like street photography.
Your talk opened my eyes to a lot of new ideas, thank you.
You did mention you are going to do a talk at Cannock photography club do you know when that is a I would like to go to it.
All the best

I'm the skinny guy with a head full of hair from Woodley Camera Club. We spoke about your Lincoln Cathedral pictures (http://www.johnswells.co.uk/gallery_177141.html)
When I got home I spent an hour playing with Nik and figured out how you got those vignettes - I'd simply never used it that way before - but will now!
Still love to know how you got the effects on the Cathedral pictures.
Gotta go - gonna spend half an hour in the kitchen with a 400mm lens and a somewhat incredulous (if that's how you spell it!) wife.....
That for last night thoroughly enjoyed it!
You sir, are completely cracker dog! That's a compliment (I think!)

Hi John, I spoke to you last night. Just to say how much I enjoyed the evening. Nice to see such good pictures put over in such a jovial way.
I unfortunately missed the middle bit due to tea/coffee duty. Love the rock shots in the middle of the panel. what did you do with those to get that effect. Also, I have forgotten how you said you did you `groyne` pictures.(I was laughing to much about the foot bit !) Looked a bit like`infra red`, but I believe you said that was not the case. Been on Topaz web site. Which ones did you say you use ?
Lot of questions, but you did say email me for more info.

Hi John,
Had a fantastic time at WA on Friday, superb set of images with a very relaxed presentation. Not many ( 2 inc yours) where i could have easily sat through the whole set of images again. Came out of the club wanting to go get my camera and start shooting some images. :-).
During your display, you mentioned Topaz for the detail and sharpening, i think ( http://www.johnswells.co.uk/photo_5259290.html), Topaz ? to add punch (http://www.johnswells.co.uk/photo_2907717.html), what was that one. And finally what was the software you use to find the edges in Pshop to create borders? (http://www.johnswells.co.uk/photo_3106688.html)
Again many thanks for the inspiration.

Last night was wonderful!
It was a great evening, John. In fact, if the chap behind me had said "stunning" many more times ... I might have suggested he buy a Thesaurus! It really was unanimous for me to book you again. I am virtually full for the 2010/2011 season, so it will have to be the following one! I would really like to hear "Mrs. Wells Thinks It's Rubbish!" Do you want to book that far ahead, or would you rather I contact you a bit later? At the moment you could have the choice of any Wed between Sept 2011 and April 2012!
I am curious as to which work you gained your FRPS with. I presume it was some of the arty work; am I right?
Many thanks for a great evening, full of humour and great images and ideas.

Brighton & Hove Camera Club talk
Hello John,
I enjoyed the talk you gave at our club recently and have been trying the Nik Effects software. I can't remember what you used to get the edges in, for example, the Cancun and SX70 images and wondered if you'd be happy to remind me?
Kind regards,
Colleen

Your recent lecture
John,
Many thanks for your recent lecture at the Nottingham Outlaws Photographic society (last Thursday)
The members really enjoyed the evening, we found it most informative and with its relaxed friendly style of presentation we all had a very good evening.
Once again thatnks from the Outlaws and we hope to see you again in the not too distant future.

NOPS presentation
John,
I wanted to thank you for a really engaging presentation yesterday evening. You have some truly fabulous images, an inspirational range of techniques and a wonderful presentation style... It's rare to see such a balance of humility and fine talent. Best wishes, Scott.

Question following Tuesday at B&HCC
Dear John. Firstly many thanks for a thoroughly interesting evening, really enjoyable. I wonder if I might just ask you about the borders you use inc the very fine black line. You mentioned Topaz and Efex but I couldn't find them there. Many thanks in advance.
Best regards

Your images, my AS project
Hi John,
I am a member or DPS and really enjoyed your recent lecture. I am also doing AS photography at evening class and looking at the Art of Photography. I was inspired by your black and white work and painting with light and I would like to include some of your images from your website in my research book if you wouldn't mind me doing this. I will obviously do this, acknowledging that it is your work and writing about you. Would you give me your permission to this? Following your lecture I managed to go out and atleast experiment with monotone on my camera which was great to do.
Thank you for the lecture and for sharing your work with us, it was great to see.
Yours sincerely,
Elaine Vizor
